the drive back felt infinitely longer than the one home had . maybe because he'd left with his shoulders caved in and exhaustion clinging to every inch of him , and now he was returning with a cooler full of leftovers , a note tucked safely into his wallet and the distinct ache that only came from leaving home behind . the hockey house was mercifully quiet when he finally pulled into the driveway sometime after midnight. most of the lights were off , only the faint glow of the television in the living room suggesting someone had forgotten to turn it off before bed . he carried bags inside as quietly as he could, setting his keys down in their usual spot and pausing for just a moment in the kitchen . it smelled different from home . less like coffee and laundry detergent and his mom's perfume lingering in the air . more like takeout containers , protein powder and whatever air freshener one of the boys had recently discovered . familiar in a different way .
his eyes caught on the fridge door.

shaking his head , noah peeled the note from the fridge and tucked it into his pocket before finally making his way upstair s, taking each step carefully to avoid the one that always creaked outside teddy's room .s hand hesitated on the handle to his bedroom door . guilt free flowing through him for a moment . the room was dark save for the soft glow of the fairy lights summer insisted on keeping strung along the headboard year-round . she was asleep beneath their duvet , curled onto her side , one hand tucked beneath her cheek in a way he'd quietly committed to memory months ago . he might have needed her mom for a while , but the blonde in his best was as much home as any place was these days . for the second time this week , he found himself crawling between the sheets into waiting arms .
